Dear Parishioners of St. Philip Neri,

Reconciliation with First Nations is a very important pastoral concern of the church today. Please read the apology by Pope Francis for the Catholic Church’s role in what is known as the Indian Residential School System.

The Holy Father’s words and sentiments are heartfelt and speak to many of his concerns that have previously been central to his messages to the universal church. He speaks of the role of elders in sharing wisdom with youth. He speaks of care for the earth for generations to come. Care for the land not as a resource to be exploited, but as a gift of heaven. He speaks of inclusion of those discarded and on the periphery. He speaks of the indignation and shame that he experiences as he hears the stories of the effects of colonization and the abuse experienced by indigenous delegates.  To read his apology, please go to: https://www.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/speeches/2022/april/documents/20220401-popoli-indigeni-canada.html?fbclid=IwAR2o81Hz_OaekJHrWU0opk7Jprpq-2I0kVuE0RuLRaeEfJQ55WRKGlDl6CM
