SPN letter 155– Sept 24

To the parishioners of St. Philip Neri Parish, sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints

“Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ”.

Psalm 145: The Lord is near to all who call on him.

Every day I will bless you Lord and praise your name forever.

Great is the Lord, his greatness is unsearchable.

The Lord is gracious and merciful, his compassion is over all that he has made … the Lord is good to all.

Our Oblate missionaries tell the story of a typical day, on the edge of a shanty town, in South Africa.  It’s early in the morning and a small group of men are waiting at the side of the road – they are waiting for one of the local farmers or construction workers to hire them to work for the day.

Some men have arrived early in the morning, others have come during the night to be first in line.  They have all come because (they want to work) – to support and care for their family.

However, they are also totally exposed – to the sun and heat, and also to the deriding and judgmental looks and comments of those passing by.  Their value depends on what people want from them.  They have no value in themselves.  They will have to settle for the minim um wage.  Yet, for some, it’s the best they can do.

The morning is beginning to slip by; dejection is settling in, hope is fading.  For most of these men there will be no 11th hour.  They will have to return home and to their family … empty-handed.

In their world, the first will again be first, and the last will be last. They wanted to work, but no one would hire them.  Imagine how they felt as the day drew to a close – rejected, useless, hopeless.

God is good … all the time!

Praise be Jesus Christ … and Mary Immaculate
