Musings for Sunday, January 19

Second Sunday of Ordinary Time 2025

“Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone.” (1Corinthians 12:4-6)

St. Paul writes these words to the Christian community at Corinth. Sometimes we, as Christians, prefer our brothers and sisters to be like us, to think like us, to act like us, to look like us and to value what we value. We want clones of ourselves. It would appear God likes and values diversity, and God nurtures that diversity through the work of the Spirit.

The next time I ask myself, what is up with that person who is doing good but doing it differently than I would do it, I am reminded that God is at work. My appropriate response ought to be a little less judgment and condemnation and a little more gratitude for the work of the Spirit.
