The Catholic Women’s League is a national organization rooted in gospel values, with approximately 70 members in our St. Philip Neri Council. We call our members through service to the people of God. With the current pandemic situation in the world our year has been fairly quite as it put a damper on many of our activities that included gatherings of members. All conventions at each level have been cancelled for this year.  All communications, workshops and meetings have been done virtually.

Our current executive which took office in January of 2020 consists of Susan Melchiorre, President; Fr Michael Dechant, Spiritual Advisor (ex officio); Mary Nordick, Past President; Lynette Cyrenne, Organization; Maris Kot, Spiritual Development; Sharon Murza, Secretary; Marie Yuzdepski, Treasurer; Nellie Yurkowski, Communications; Ethna Martin, Health.

CWL consists of four levels of activities – Parish, Diocesan, Provincial and National. Resolutions are formed at the local level and if approved, will continue to the national level.  All levels keep us informed on activities.

We strive to support our parish in all ways particularly spiritually including having a CWL Sunday where we take over all ministries, Way of the Cross evening and joining and supporting other activities.

Although we could not hold our annual pie sale fundraiser or sell Catholic Missions in Canada’s yearly calendar, we were able to support some ventures.  We were able to cover half the cost of our member Mary Gerwing to attend Adult Formation and also make a donation to support Saskatoon Pregnancy Options.

The St. Philip Neri CWL Council are thankful for the faithful ladies that continue to knit scarves and mitts, as well as prayer shawls for both adults and sick children, that are distributed by our parish health nurse.  This is a great comfort to those that are in need, both physically and spiritually, we are very grateful and appreciative to have a parish health nurse as one of our CWL members, that has kept its members and parish up to date on the latest issues that could be detrimental to our Christian values, taking place in the health care field today.

The “CWL Clothing Depot” which is located in the basement of the Friendship Inn on 20th Street, sells donated items at a very cheap price or free if you cannot pay.  Items donated include small household articles, clothing, toys, etc.  The depot relies on donations and approximately 200 volunteers, 20 of those from St. Philip Neri Council. The depot is able to help families and children that are in transition or in dire need, the volunteers are rewarded each year with a luncheon at Smiley’s Restaurant. The all profits of the sale of goods are distributed back into the community.
